The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has called on taxpayers to file their individual tax returns before or March 31, 2022.
The obligation to file annual tax returns is stipulated in section 41 of the personal income tax (PITA). This provision makes it mandatory for all taxable person(s) to file returns of aggregate income from all sources for the preceding year with the state tax authority in which they are deemed resident within 90 days from the commencement of every new year assesment.
About The LIRS
LIRS is the major funding arm of the Lagos State Government charged with the responsibility of collecting taxes and other revenues. Over the years, LIRS has increased the State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) by executing various pioneering programs and implementing strategies which have positively impacted revenue generation and collection. The IGR had gradually moved from a monthly average of about N 11.3 Billion Naira in 2009 to approximately N 32 Billion Naira in 2019, thereby making Lagos State less dependent on proceeds from Federation Account / Federal Allocation.
Lagos State moves towards meeting the needs of a mega city, LIRS continues to position itself as a major funding arm of the state government by putting in place structures that will ensure collection of the proper amount of revenue at the least cost.
