The seamless process involved in obtaining Tax Identification Number in Uganda

Tax Identification Number (TIN) in Uganda is mandatory for individuals and entities. A TIN is a unique ten-digit identifying number allocated by the Uganda Revenue Authority to prospective Taxpayers to enable them to meet their tax obligations. The TIN is a legal requirement and it applies to all taxpayers regardless of their tax transactions.

WHY DO YOU NEED A TIN?

Obtaining a Tax Identification Number in Uganda from the Uganda Revenue Authority enables you to do the following;

  1. Import or export goods within and outside Uganda.

  2. Claim tax benefits that accrue to you e.g. tax refunds etc.

  3. Access bank loans for amounts above 50 Million shillings.

  4. Acquire a license from any Government Agency.

  5. Motor Vehicle First-time Motor Vehicle Rregistration

  6. Process land transactions above 50 Million Shillings.

HOW DO I GET A TAX IDENTIFICATION NUMBER IN UGANDA

Applications are filed by both individuals and non-individuals (companies) and requirements are dependent on the categories. Applications are done online or filed at the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).

UGANDAN REVENUE AUTHORITY (URA)

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) is a government revenue collection agency established by the Parliament of Uganda, and is responsible for enforcing, assessing, collecting, and accounting for the various taxes imposed in Uganda.

HOW DO I GET AN INDIVIDUAL TAX IDENTIFICATION NUMBER IN UGANDA?

An individual TIN is required by individuals earning income (either from employment or business or property, rental) or Registering/transferring a Motor vehicle or carrying out a Land Transfer.

Individual without business

  1. Duly filled application form;

  2. Signed copy of terms and conditions;

  3. Two valid copies of identifications or valid employment identification for employees; and

  4. For diplomats; letter from the ministry of foreign affairs and a diplomatic I.D.

Registration of a Minor individual (Below 18 years of age)  

  1. Duly filled and signed (by guardian) application form – DT – 1001;

  2. Signed (by guardian) copy of the terms and conditions;

  3. Where guardian is the parent, two valid copies of identification (of the guardian);

  4. Copy of the birth certificate of the minor;

  5. Where guardian is not the parent, two valid copies of the identification (of the guardian);

  6. Signed copy of the terms and conditions;

Individual with business (non-registered business)

  1. Duly filled and signed application form – DT – 1001;

  2. Two copies of valid Identifications of the applicant;

  3. A signed copy of the terms and conditions;

Diplomats

  1. Diplomat ID;

  2. Valid copy of passport;

  3. Letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Non-citizens of Uganda

  1. Valid visa;

  2. Work permit from the Ministry of Internal Affairs;

  3. All refugees need to have official refugee identification cards or documents from the refugee commission of Uganda;

  4. Valid copy of passport.

URA TIN REGISTRATION FOR COMPANIES

A non-individual TIN is required by companies; partnerships; Estates or Trust; Government bodies; Donor Funded Projects; Diplomatic missions; clubs or societies; Local Authorities; Non-Governmental Organizations and Community-Based Organizations and the requirements for each organization varies
